Clearwater, Florida – In a matter of seconds, the Adam’s Mark Hotel on Clearwater Beach was reduced to rubble. Kathleen Matheny, Spectator: “I’m still shaking, that was the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen.” Hundreds of people came out to witness the action — some because they were forced to evacuate from nearby homes and businesses, like John Myers and his family. John Myers, Evacuated Home: “We overlook the building. We’ve been watching it for the last two months, seen the demolition, so we’re quite excited.” Others came to bid the 35-year-old building one final farewell. Gillian Willard, Clearwater Resident: “I’m kinda sad to see it go down… it’s been a landmark for us for quite awhile.” Out of all this rubble will emerge a two-tower condominium complex with a small hotel. But not everyone watching today is optimistic about the progress Clearwater Beach is making. John Thurmond, Clearwater Resident: “I just hate to see all this over here turn condos and all the mom and pop motels gone. It’s just going to be all condos.” Cheryl Thurmond, Clearwater Resident: “It’s going to be less beach access for the general public.” Mayor Frank Hibbard is trying to assure residents and tourists that this is a step in a better direction. Frank Hibbard, Clearwater Mayor: “Clearwater really is progressing. Our beach is still going to be open to the public, but it’s going to be enhanced for all of our tourists, our visitors and our residents. And that’s what we are excited about.” He pressed the ignite button, folding a 35-year-old landmark, and clearing the way for new beachfront condos.Sara Dorsey, Tampa Bay’s 10 News
